A Book of Hate

‘The price of hating other human beings is loving oneself less.’ – Eldridge Cleaver

‘We hate some persons because we do not know them; and will not know them because we hate them.’ – Charles Caleb Colton

‘Love is blind; hate is deaf.’

‘I imagine one of the reasons people cling to their hates so stubbornly is because they sense, once hate is gone, they will be forced to deal with pain.’ – James Baldwin

Sephy is a Cross, one of the privileged in a society where the ruling Crosses treat the pale-skinned noughts as inferiors. But her baby daughter has a nought father – Callum. Eaten up with bitterness, Callum’s brother Jude, blames Sephy for the terrible losses his family has suffered.

Now Jude’s life rests on a knife edge. Will Sephy be forced, once again, to take sides?

A razor-sharp and intensely moving novel, the second in the Noughts & Crosses sequence.

  1. This is my favourite book of the four of them. Read it years ago and now I’m a young adult I appreciate them more after a quick re-read. Jude is my favourite character because of his lack of feeling and especially his denial. Cara’s character really got to me, she was so nice, but I guess it had to be done. Absolutely fab book which strangely makes me sadder than reading the 1st one πŸ™‚ Soooo powerful. It’s about time there was some decent books depicting the shoe on the other foot – I recommend them to everyone!!!

  2. I love the Noughts and Crosses series! So far I am up to Knife Edge. When I read what Callum wrote in that letter to Sephy, I thought he sent her that so Sephy would think that she could go off with some other man, not stay with Callum, who is now dead.

  3. malorie, this is my favorite book ever, this series has been un-put-down-able, you recently came to my school and well, i thought the books where brilliant, i have read noughts and crosses and knifes edge in 6 days, i cant wait to read checkmate. you have inspired me !!! i though what you did to stephy with callums note really shook up her life and well, i think stephy is a bit mean to meggie, i though no other book would be better than noughts and crosses but i thought wrong, kife edge is amazing πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ x

  4. I think all four of the noughts and crosses series are very touching and moving. They make people stop and think racism is rong.I think all of the series are amazing, but at the same time make you stop and think.Just think.

  5. They are all very powerful books that touch a very sad subject.Ithink that what callum said in the letter to Sephy was quite emotional, and quite mean. They spent all that time together and know Callum says he did not mean any of it.

  6. They are all very powerful books that touch a very sad subject.Ithink that what callum said in the letter to Sephy was quite emotional, and quite mean. They spent all that time together and now Callum says he did not mean any of it.

  8. I love this bookk because you start to see a little bit about how Jude is hurting and I sort of feel sorry for him because he will not let himself love I still read the books like 24/7 xx

  9. The noughts and crosses series is truly powerful. I read this book in about a day because it really is a page turner. Sad and full of emotion x

  19. As soon as I picked up Noughts & Crosses in my school library, I read it. I read the first chapter and then I couldn’t stop reading it. The book soon became addictive and hard to stop reading. When I finished reading Noughts & Crosses, I soon realised why everyone began describing the whole story, “powerful”. I had to find out what happened next so I next found Knife Edge in the library and began reading, I just couldn’t stop. I read for about 2 hours everyday when I came back from school and I’m just half way through the book. Malorie Blackman is now my favourite author and inspiration!

  20. The book was amazing I can’t wait to read Checkmate I read one chapter of it like a preview at the end of Knife Edge. I was really attached to the book because it was full of twists and turns and exciting bits and you actually played on the readers emotions! I love all your books and how mainly everything you right about is twisted around the fact that people are different in colour but no matter what colour they there is no need to judge them as everyone in this world deserves to be treated the same and there should be no difference between Black, White, Brown OR whatever colour we are all the same!!!

  21. The noughts and crosses series is the most powerful and moving series i have ever read. knife edge was such an amazing book.I cried when I read the letter that callum wrote to sephy. keep up the good work!

  22. Out of the noughts and crosses series i think this book is the darkest and coldest one. Jude’s character is very scary, but at the same time jude’s character shows that he can actually love but dosent want to. I finished this book in 3 days
